As a child I spent alot of time alone thus I played alone. I did have an older sibling and a younger sibling. They were both boys and we were each six years apart. My parents were both working and I wasn't allowed to go outside by myself on a school night. I was encouraged to play alone. I do remember though when my father would come home and wrestle with me. I usually ended up crying and my mom ended up yelling at my dad, but I loved it.
Play is not similar to when I was growing up. Today everything is electronic. I used a lot of imaginative play when I was younger. I see that a lot of kids lack imagination. They want everything scripted for them. I would hope that kids could find joy in the simple things. I would hope that kids today wouldn't feel the need to have "stuff" in order to play.
I think the role of play was beneficial. It taught me to be confident with myself, stand on my own two feet, and to be independent of things and people. It showed me how to be creative and to find solutions to problems.
I enjoyed reading your quote by Plato. It's amazing how much you can learn from a person through play. I've learned a lot about the children in my program by conducting a 30 minute observation. You learn their likes and dislikes, how well their languge is developed, how they view their world, how creative they can be, and to what extent do they use their imagination. I could just go on and on about how much you can learn about a person through play. GREAT QUOTE!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the quote by Mark Twain. How interesting to think of work and play as the same thing, under different conditions? Of course this would naturally be true for children who are learning in a stimulating and engaging way. What about adults? We are always told to choose a career that we love, this way our work will feel like play. The question is, how many adults actually feel this way?
ReplyDeleteI completely forgot about coloring! I could color for hours. I love it that work and play are the same thing. I've often quoted Piaget saying that play is children's work. Great quote.
ReplyDeleteHi Johan,
ReplyDeleteThere is research that explores the process of coloring and how it actually helps relax you. When my children come from gross motor play I tell them to take out the crayons and paper and draw their experience.
I love your quote from Plato. Play brings out the best and worst in people. And it is in play that people feel more open to say what they feel because play is supposed to be that time to be free and open.
Great insight!
